Make a WhatsApp Business QR code

A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with your number the moment it's scanned — no saving contacts, no typing. The professional touch is the pre-filled message: 'I'd like a quote for…' arrives with the customer's first tap, so you know which poster, product or location sent them.

  1. 1

Enter your number with country code

International format without symbols: 447700900123, not +44 7700 900123. The generator builds the wa.me link for you.

  2. 2

    Write a starter message

This text appears pre-typed in the customer's chat box — they just press send. Make it specific to the placement: 'Table 12 — ready to order', 'Quote request from the van sticker'.

  3. 3

    Download and display the code

Print it where customers have questions: menus, product tags, shop windows, invoices. Test it with your own phone first.

One number, many codes

Because the starter message can differ per code, one WhatsApp number can serve a whole estate of print — a different message per poster, per branch, per product line. Each conversation opens with its origin labelled, which is attribution you don't have to pay for. Use the bulk generator to produce the set from a CSV of name, message pairs pointing at the same number.

Business app features worth switching on

WhatsApp Business (free) adds away messages, quick replies and labels — the three that matter when scans pick up. An away message after hours sets expectations; quick replies answer the five questions everyone asks; labels sort quote requests from support.

The code itself works with personal WhatsApp accounts too, so you can start now and migrate to the Business app later without reprinting.

Privacy and expectations

Scanning starts a chat — it reveals the customer's number to you and yours to them, exactly like any WhatsApp conversation. Put a word next to the code about what happens ('Scan to chat with us on WhatsApp') so nobody is surprised by where they land. And only print the number you actually monitor; a code that opens an unanswered chat is worse than no code.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Enter the number in international format with no + or spaces, or the link won't resolve.
  • Don't skip the starter message — it's your only attribution.
  • Set an away message before the codes go out, not after the first missed weekend enquiry.

Common questions

Do I need WhatsApp Business?

No — the code works with any WhatsApp account. The Business app adds away messages and quick replies that help once enquiries pick up.

Can different codes reach the same number?

Yes — give each placement its own starter message and every chat arrives labelled with where it came from.

What does the customer see?

WhatsApp opens with a chat to your number and your message pre-typed, ready to send.

Can I change the message after printing?

No — it's encoded in the pattern. Reprint with a new code, or keep messages generic enough to age well.
